Waterfront and Sediment

The ARCADIS Sediment and Waterfront group is a fast-growing global leader in the fields of sediment assessment and management, coastal and port planning and engineering, and aquatic habitat restoration.

The ARCADIS Sediment and Waterfront group possesses a comprehensive suite of engineering, scientific, and regulatory expertise and tools that we apply to understand the challenges facing our clients and to design sound, cost-effective solutions to those challenges.

Innovation Born of Experience

ARCADIS is committed to building on our core strengths and actively promoting original ideas, novel approaches, and workable solutions to the unique challenges of our clients worldwide.

ARCADIS' fresh perspective to sediment and waterfront issues is solidly supported by our unparalleled experience with investigating and designing riverine, lacustrine, and estuarine sediment remedies.

Over the past 20 years, the staff of the Sediment and Waterfront group has

  • Developed and implemented reasonable assessment and mitigation strategies at sites with sediment volumes ranging from a few hundred cubic yards to several million cubic yards.
  • Designed successful remediation and restoration approaches at more than 80 aquatic sites in the United States and abroad.
  • Conducted field investigations, evaluated risks, assessed remedial options, and devised effective response programs in small creeks and along entire river and harbor systems.

ARCADIS—A National and International Authority

ARCADIS possesses exceptional authority when addressing the effectiveness, implementability, and costs of waterfront and sediment remedies: Current federal guidance reflects much of ARCADIS' work product in this area, and we are trusted by our clients to work the most challenging sediment sites in the country (and increasingly around the world).

ARCADIS—Client-Focused

Do you know that you need a cap placed over some contaminated sediments? If so, the ARCADIS Sediment and Waterfront Group will cost-efficiently design and build a reliable cap that meets your needs and those of your regulators.

Do you know that you have a problem, but don't know what the solution might be? If so, the ARCADIS Sediment and Waterfront Group will work with you to identify the scope of the problem, apply a strategic management approach to solving the problem, and then implement solutions.

This is the ARCADIS client-focus. We understand that each client's approach to solving today's challenges or building to meet tomorrow's opportunities is unique. That's why we have developed a comprehensive, flexible suite of tools that can be tailored to deliver a range of products to our clients, and why we tailor the tools we use based on a strategic understanding of our clients' needs. Just because we have a screwdriver, and know how to use it, doesn't mean we'll use it at a client site filled with nails—we'll bring our hammers and our carpenters and get the job done using tools and skills appropriate to the project.

Tools and Services

Our professionals are keenly in tune with the business and regulatory communities, and our vision is as progressive as it is technically proficient. With offices near major rivers and ports around the United States and across the globe, ARCADIS maintains all the planning, engineering, and scientific expertise, tools, and services needed for waterfront development, shoreline protection, waterway design, habitat restoration, the management and remediation of contaminated sediments, dredging design, and more.

While the Sediment and Waterfront group is best known for our national leadership in the management of contaminated sediments, we've also successfully executed important waterfront projects demanding an array of engineering and scientific disciplines. To meet our clients' multifaceted remediation, port planning, and habitat restoration needs and challenges, the accomplished, internationally-recognized professionals of the Sediment and Waterfront group offer a range of services including modeling and systems analysis, site assessment and strategy development consulting and geo-waterfront engineering.

Locations: Domestic and International Experience

ARCADIS' waterfront group can be found working across the United States and Canada, in the nations of the European Union and Scandinavia and in Brazil. From the estuaries and coastal rivers of the North Pacific to Lake Ontario to the Mediterranean, our expertise is being utilized by multinational clients to remediate sites, expand their facilities, and improve the functioning of aquatic habitats.

One of the looming issues facing our multinational clients today is the emergence of increasingly strict regulation of sediment management in the European Union. As regulation in the E.U. begins to coalesce, firms operating in Europe will be faced with many of the same challenges that their U.S.-based counterparts face today.

To aid our clients in the E.U. during this time of transition, our U.S. and European staff regularly conduct technical exchanges. By combining local expertise with lessons learned from the most challenging sediments sites around the world, ARCADIS offers our multinational clients a consistently excellent product regardless of the continent on which they are working.

ARCADIS' global reach offers other benefits to our multinational clients, many of whose sites are located in areas of the planet where regulations and standards are developing rapidly. By working with our clients' environmental managers, we can ensure that work done overseas is done to the appropriate standards. This harmonization of policies and approaches is increasingly demanded by our clients' shareholders and owners, and is a unique benefit of ARCADIS' global footprint.
